HOW TO WASH A DOG BED

EASY 3 STEP GUIDE

Sometimes vacuuming or using a lint roller on your dogs bed is more than enough, however- sometimes after too much playtime in the mud or exploring the garden, your dog will bring more than just dust or hair to the dog bed! Cleaning and washing your dog bed is essential to prevent unwanted bacteria and the likelihood of fleas. Built up dirt can also cause a very unpleasant smell in the home. This is why we've created a guide to help you keep your dogs bed clean for a happier and healthier dog.

MACHINE WASHING

The first thing you must do is check the care label. Some dog beds (especially ones with removable covers) can have very specific instructions.

However, if they do not have care instructions then there are some tips to keep in mind to safely machine-wash your dogs' bed.

  1. Vacuum to make sure any access dirt is removed.
  2. Remove cover off bed if possible.
  3. Use a non-toxic detergent if possible to prevent any harmful toxins for your dog.
  4. If the care label doesn't state otherwise- then wash at the highest temperature possible to make sure all bacteria and germs are killed.

TOP TIP: If you want to be very thorough then machine wash it a second time to make sure it's thoroughly cleaned.

HAND-WASHING

If your dog bed doesn't have a removable cover or the care label states it should not be machine washed, then opt for hand-washing.

  1. Start off by vacuuming the dog bed to make sure all dirt and fall out hair is removed.
  2. Fill up a basin or bath tub with warm water and put in an adequate amount of non-toxic detergent. Make sure you have enough water to submerge the bed in.
  3. Soak your pet bed for 10-15 minutes.
  4. If there's still stains, you can use some baking soda and a scrub brush to thoroughly scrub the stains.

TOP TIP: Use a toothbrush instead of a scrub brush to get into hard-to-reach areas in the dog bed.

DRYING

After machine washing:

  1. Leave out to dry
  2. Unless the care label says otherwise, you can put in the dryer on a low heat setting but we recommend you avoid using dryer sheets.

After hand-washing:

  1. Ring out gently to get rid of access water.
  2. Leave out to dry - preferably somewhere sunny.

How do I get rid of a lingering smell from my dog bed ?

You can try spot cleaning with your non-toxic detergent and a clean wet cloth. Sometimes a more aggressive treatment is needed- in which you can use an enzyme cleaner.

How often should I wash my dog bed ?

We recommend once a week. If you can't weekly then we'd advise at least once every two weeks.

How do I dispose of an old pet bed ?

You can dispose of your old pet bed by placing it in your general waste bin.
